My Ceramics students have been working on Coil vases. For this first coil piece they have to build their vase at least 12" tall, include at lease four different design elements and include some negative space. I will unload a kiln with the bisque fired vases tomorrow and am looking forward to seeing the finished vases after they are glazed and fired a second time.
In the Advanced Studio Art classes we began a painting unit two weeks ago and after exploring watercolor we are moving on to tempera and acrylic paints. I thought it would be good to review color theory and have them start with mixing primary, secondary and intermediate colors. I painted along with them and could appreciate the difficulty they were experiencing trying to mix the secondary and intermediate colors. It takes a lot of patience and a good eye for color. They will each create an individual color wheel using a templet they will design. Stay tuned for the finished color wheels.
The culmination of the drawing unit was for my students to choose a final drawing project that interested them and showcased what they had learned from the past month of studying contour, value, volumetric and gesture drawing. I gave students six different choices and some came up with ideas of their own.
Today I printed photos from my students first photo assignment (Visual Elements) and was impressed with how well they did. They learned about the following photographic elements: texture, line, shape, color, pattern, form, depth and balance and photographed at least 15 shots for each category. I had them choose their favorite photo to print. Look for these photos (in the next week) around the WH campus, in my classroom and at the District Office!
It is so much fun to see the kiln before and after a glaze firing, it feels a little like Christmas morning when I lift the lid on a glaze kiln!
